Zelda Martin, a fibre artist who recently exhibited at The Corner Café and the KZNSA Christmas Fair, conducted a mixed media workshop at Durban Girls’ College Art studios on Saturday 23 Feb 2013. The session started with Angela Mc Call one of the participants & a director of everyONEcounts talking briefly about the first everyONEcounts initiative and our current campaign, which aims at raising awareness about human trafficking.
Most participants couldn’t wait to get started on their pieces, so as soon as Angela had made her introduction, everyone rushed off to their workstations and immediately started working.
Zelda provided a cream coloured base fabric & had asked the participants to bring along a small image (original artwork or printed copy) or a found object. They were also asked to bring, needles, threads and any other embellishments or collage materials. Zelda also provided scraps of fabric, in two huge containers) that in many cases provided colour inspiration for the resulting artworks.
Demonstrations of various techniques from transferring images onto fabric, paint techniques to stitching techniques occurred spontaneously as the work demanded.
Judging from the focused attention and keen interaction between all involved in the workshop, it was an absolute success.
